[Review] New Moon Soundtrack

By Michelle October 24, 2009

So, my suspicions were right. The New Moon soundtrack is actually really good. Well, mostly really good and far superior to last year’s Twilight soundtrack. Released early due to overwhelming demand, the Twilight Saga crazies, sorry, fans, got to hear it a few days earlier than originally planned. All of the songs on the soundtrack are original and exclusive to the record, with the exception of I Belong To You by Muse, which was remixed for the soundtrack.

As mentioned, the New Moon soundtrack is much better than Twilight one. This record is a lot more mature and less obvious than the previous one. Gone are the teen angst ridden tracks like those from Paramore. Here we are presented with many indie and alternative big artists like Death Cab For Cutie, Sea Wolf, Muse and Thom Yorke, who all bring more depth to the album, and hopefully the film. …read more

New Moon Soundtrack Listing

By Michelle September 23, 2009

The tracklisting for the upcoming New Moon was recently released and it doesn’t look half bad. Last year’s Twilight soundtrack was okay with tracks from Muse and Iron & Wine and a bunch of very predictable inclusions (Paramore, Linkin Park etc), but the New Moon soundtrack actually looks uncomfortably good. Once again Muse are featured, along with Death Cab For Cutie, Thom Yorke and Sea Wolf. I’m not sure how I feel about bands and musicians who I consider credible getting involved with the Twilight Saga franchise, but considering I work in a bookshop, where a large percentage of our sales are from Twilight books and other related items, I’m probably going to have to listen to it a lot after its release and should just be grateful it’s not terrible! And no sign of a Rob Pattinson track either, which we can all be grateful for. …read more

[Review] Arcade Fire - Funeral

By Michelle April 19, 2009

Funeral is the debut album from Canada’s Arcade Fire. On its release in September 2004, it was met with very positive critical reviews and within a year Arcade Fire were travelling the world on the back of it. I love this record and was reminded of it recently when watching the trailer for the film adaptation of the amazing Where the Wild Things Are, (http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/wherethewildthingsare/), in which a new version of Wake Up is featured. The movie looks amazing and I can’t wait until its release in October. But back to Arcade Fire.

From the get-go, Funeral is ambitious, epic and urgent. …read more

When I first saw the track listing for this soundtrack I wondered how it would work in the film. I’d read the graphic novel and seen the movie trailers and the songs just didn’t seem to fit into the idea I had in my head of how the film’s soundtrack would be. Watching the film I’m sorry to say that I think most of the songs were chosen in error. They seemed to stick out like sore thumbs instead of complementing the scenes there were a part of. There were a couple of notable exceptions like the use of the Tears for Fears track Everybody Wants to Rule the World, which played in Veidt’s elevator.

While the songs are not completely appropriate for the film, the soundtrack itself is a great album. Taking tracks from the last several decades, genres are crossed but in a smart and complimentary way. …read more
